If you already have relatives in Canada, you may be wishing to join them. Family Sponsorship helps families reunite in Canada and can be an alternative route to traditional work or study Visas.

Family Sponsorship can help you reach permanent member status in Canada, without having to meet the traditional requirements, but it does require a family member to already have permanent residency. Let’s look at the details, so you can see if Family Sponsorship is an available option for you.

What is Family Sponsorship?

Family Class Sponsorship was introduced as part of Canada’s bid to keep families together. Our government prioritizes the processing of Family Sponsorship applications because it is committed to keeping families together. There are many different relationships that can qualify, and the scheme is one of the most generous family sponsorship programs in the world.

A relative can sponsor you if they are:

  • Over 18=years-old

  • A Canadian citizen

  • A Canadian permanent resident

  • Registered under the Canadian Indian Act

Once your sponsorship request is approved, you can live, study and work in Canada.

Your sponsor is responsible for supporting you financially for your first 3 years in Canada, so having a job lined up may make this decision easier for your sponsor. If a sponsor sponsors a dependent child, they are financially responsible for 10 years, or until the minor is 25, whichever is first.

Who can Qualify?

Canada understands that a family is more than a partner and child, and that’s why the list of relationships that qualify is more flexible. You can be sponsored if you fit any of the following relationship criteria:

  • Spouse (same-sex or opposite-sex)

  • Common-law partner (same-sex or opposite-sex)

  • Dependent children

  • Parents

  • Grandparents

  • Siblings, nephews and nieces, grandchildren

  • Any other relative who fits specific conditions

  • Any accompanying relative of the above

Many of these categories have additional conditions, and we will be happy to talk you through them. If you are a parent or grandparent of the sponsor, then the process is slightly different. Sponsor forms are accepted in batches, so having your bid prepared before the 2020 dates are announced is ideal.

The Process

Once your sponsor has applied to sponsor you, you will have 60 days to complete your application and submit your supporting documents.

This is where we can help.

Make your application an easy one for all involved by having a job offer in place first. With a job in place, the financial risk to your sponsor is minimal. We can find you a job placement that matches your skills and help you with the paperwork to make it happen.
